The Beginning of Croatia

5 June 2009

Our first experience with Croatia was a couple of hours we spent in Zagreb (the capitol) on a stopover between Ljubljana and Split.

We walked a few blocks to the main square where we found a dancing group performing to Flogging Molly. Having the new found ability to take slow exposure photos, I was a very busy girl. I scampered about taking photos as the music played on. We walked around a bit, checking out the Gothic-looking cathedral, then returned to the main square to watch fire throwers for a few minutes before we had to leave to catch our train.
The main square in Zagreb.

Our train was at 10.55, so this was taken about an hour into our Zagreb adventure (if you can call it that).
The Cathedral. Although one spire was under construction, it was still impressive.

As I write this I am peeping at Split through the train window after a really long night train. I'm not sure I was able to sleep at all. We got into a compartment with one other guy (who we thought would be getting off soon). Apparently, he was going all the way to Split as well. Even so, three people should in a compartment made for six should have been ok... but the seats didn't fold together as they do in most compartments used for night travel. I tried multipled awkward and uncomfortable positions using the two side by side seats I had until I went to the bathroom and one of my two seats was usurped by the other guy in the compartment. Greg had two seats on the other side, so I was left sitting on my one remaining seat until Greg woke up and let me put my feet up on one of his. Even so, this is not a train ride I want to repeat.
The train is about to pull into the station. I wonder what this town holds for me.
